—

This volume is the result of a collective reflection developed in the UniNomade network in the months immediately following the first signals of the current financial and economic crisis. The contributions of Chicchi, Di Stefano, Fumagalli, Lucarelli, Marazzi, Paulrè, Roth, Terranova and Vercellone constitute the first organic and interdisciplinary attempt to analyze a crisis that is not merely financial in nature but which regards globalization and neoliberal capitalism as we have know them until now. It is a totally new kind of crisis different from the ones we have seen over the last 25 years because it is a systemic crisis that goes beyond the financial sector revealing the ineffectiveness of the extraordinary economic measures that have been actuated over the past few months by single nation-states. Thus it is a financial crisis that immediately effects the so-called “real economy” and that demonstrates how financialization is nothing other than one of the most recent and perverse articulations of capitalist command. These contributions, of a high scientific and political character, communicate the urgency of not only identifying new economic and political categories able to interpret the contemporary forms of capitalistic power but, above all, they stimulate us to elaborate radically positive exit strategies from this crisis towards a new horizon of constructing the common.

“In these months, after the proposal to close this list at the end of the second round of discussion, we have not communicated news about this project. In the meantime, activities have been continuing off screen. Working with the materials collected over the past 2 years, we have put together a book that is composed by the richness and multiplicity of the posts that gave life to the edu-factory project. The book, which will be published in Italian by manifestolibri, is entitled L’universita’ globale: il nuovo mercato del sapere (Global University: The New Market for Knowledge). It is the result of the selection and translation of many of the contributions to the list in the past 2 years. This book is now ready. Meanwhile we are also working to publish this book in the English language, as well as Spanish, French and German. If anybody would help us to realise this work, please let us know. In the next weeks, we will be launching this book and the edu-factory project in Italian universities and the presentation will be recorded and put on our web site as soon as possible.

In Italian universities (and indeed across the wider spectrum of the country’s education system) there are currently very strong protests against cutbacks by Italian government. The slogan of this movement is “We won’t pay for your crisis”. We see the edu-factory books as a tool to open a debate, socializing the 2 years of collective and transnational research that we have made together on the edu-factory list.”

After a decade of digital fetishism, the spectres of the financial and energy crisis have also affected new media culture and brought into question the autonomy of networks. Yet activism and the art world still celebrate Creative Commons and the ‘creative cities’ as the new ideals for the Internet generation. Unmasking the animal spirits of the commons, Matteo Pasquinelli identifies the key social conflicts and business models at work behind the rhetoric of Free Culture. The corporate parasite infiltrating file-sharing networks, the hydra of gentrification in ‘creative cities’ such as Berlin and the bicephalous nature of the Internet with its pornographic underworld are three untold dimensions of contemporary ‘politics of the common’. Against the latent puritanism of authors like Baudrillard and Zizek, constantly quoted by both artists and activists, Animal Spirits draws a conceptual ‘book of beasts’. In a world system shaped by a turbulent stock market, Pasquinelli unleashes a politically incorrect grammar for the coming generation of the new commons.

Matteo Pasquinelli is an Amsterdam-based writer and researcher at the Queen Mary University of London and has an activist background in Italy. He edited the collection Media Activism: Strategies and Practices of Independent Communication (2002) and co-edited C’Lick Me: A Netporn Studies Reader (2007). Since 2000, he has been editor of the mailing list Rekombinant (www.matteopasquinelli.com).
